For immediate release
Data collected by international online education company, Nessy Learning, finds that most children using this online reading program from home instead of from school made a year’s worth of reading progress in 4 weeks. You can read the case study here.
As part of a global effort to provide help and support in a world affected by coronavirus, Nessy Learning offered free licences to two of their online, educational programs for free for any school impacted by closures. Over 4,000 schools have so far registered to take part.
Data drawn from 4 sample schools, 2 in the United Kingdom and 2 in the United States (California and Texas) showed that children using the online Nessy Reading & Spelling program from their homes for 1-4 weeks had average reading gains of .87 to 1.23 grade levels (year levels in UK) during the school closure period.
To be included in the results, students had to have begun working with the materials after their schools closed and had to spend at least 40 minutes per week working on the program.
When Mike Jones CEO of Nessy Learning who created the online learning company in 1999 was asked why he believed students made so much progress in such a short time he said:
“It’s no surprise to me that children have been making rapid gains in literacy using Nessy at home. There are years of research proving the effectiveness of using structured literacy. Children who are intensively following an individual program of study will make incredible progress. As well as being guided by Nessy, many of these children are getting individual attention from a parent – schools can’t provide such a high level of support.”
– Mike Jones, CEO
Nessy Learning will continue to offer free licences for schools until the end of July.
